Description
Ofadarice also know as Oryza Sativa, has grown in culinary prominence over the years, even far beyond the shores of the nation, in US, Canada and the UK.
Ofada rice has carved a niche for itself. A meal of the local short, stout, brown or white rice had been elevated to a thing of status and cultural pride, especially given the nature of its preparation and the unique sauce that is used in serving it.
Nigeria as a nation, currently consume about 5.3 million metric tonnes of polished white rice yearly. Only six hundred thousand of this is produced locally. Which means we import 4.7 million metric tonnes yearly.
New research, published in the British Medical Journal, has found high-consumption of white rice to be associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The increase in risk was especially noted in Asian populations.
The study wasn’t clear on just why white rice may impact diabetes risk, but as Time.com notes, it may have to do with its high score on the glycemic index (GI), meaning it could cause spikes in blood sugar.
So the question is: Why consume so much of something (White polished rice) that may be harmful to our health. When we have a very good local substitute? We at Ofadarice.com are focused on ONE thing only “Ofadarice” Nothing more!
